Just now
Trump and the Republicans are sleepwalking through a war they are losing badly. This is far worse than even Bush's wars on Iraq and Afghanistan and the potential for disaster grows daily with Trump's TACO diplomacy.
Congress should remove Trump from our misery, but sadly, they all continue to cower in the face of maniacal tyranny.

NYT...keep it up..."war now entering new phase"...as if this war has some kind of logic to it. There are no phases, no plans, no strategy, no tactics. Please media, call this war for what it is, a Trump shoot from the hip, hunch, feeling in the gut, mess that he and his band of incompetents have no clue how to exit. As usual it will take a Democratic President to clean this mess up---assuming we have elections.

Remember when Trump claimed (correctly) that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose supporters? He may as well have said "I could start another unnecessary, illegal, forever war in the middle east and not lose supporters."

You have to wonder what the hapless Trump regime has in store next for its failing foray into war with Iran. Like France in the World Cup, the U.S. has been outplayed, outmaneuvered, and outgunned by Iran. Trump has no Plan C because he never had a Plan B and, incomprensible, never had a Plan A. He relied on pugnacity, bellicosity, ignorance and hubris to execute his misguided war with Iran. It has all been a crushing, expensive, deadly failure, and everyone in the Trump regime knows it. What is incredible is that no one seems to care. They get paid, have excellent health benefits, and enjoy all the spoils of government work. So what if hundreds or thousands of Americans are killed and wounded? Not to worry. There’s always a Plan D. No, there is not.

The only way to “win” this war is to destroy Iran and kill millions of people. It will also require ground troops. Millions of ground troops. The US Army and Marines together are only 700,000 troops. Iran is the size of Alaska with 93 million people. The US was unable to control Iraq (48 million people), Afghanistan (45 million people), or for that matter Viet Nam (41 million people in 1970). Btw, 2-4 million Vietnamese died in that war and the US still lost. Do you think the US can control 93 million Iranians with 700,000 ground troops? Does the US have the stomach for this much killing? And don’t forget that they hate the US for deposing a democratically elected government and installing the Shah, who killed and tortured thousands of Iranians. Enjoy your war Trump voters.

Trump should better know he needs to solve this problem before Election Day. That's when his free reign ends. All of his insane policies, both domestic and foreign, will get the utmost scrutiny. No more confirmation for incompetents like Todd Blanche, "Pete" Hegseth & Tulsi Gabbard. Even Jay Clayton isn't the best choice for DNI. People like "Tom Homan" and Markwayne Mullins need to be invited to congressional hearings to discuss why they are killing American citizens and people with legal rights to be here.

Trump is impulsive and has no experience or even cares about the impacts of his war on the world. He’s untethered from reality. The real question here is where are the checks on his actions? Republicans own this folly as much as Trump for letting him toddle around with no consequences.

Since bombing is not working there are only 2 options left - a ground war or just leave. I suspect the People will prefer to leave. Bibi will try to convince Trump, the Iranian military is a paper tiger. The old Chinese curse applies, "I wish you an interesting life."

Trump wandered into a trap set by the Iranians. The conflict will end when the latter decides. The timing will tell us whether they more hate Trump or America. If it's Trump, they'll keep him trapped forever, like they did Jimmy Carter. But if they hate America more, they'll free Trump sooner, so he can continue to destroy his own country. Either way, Iran wins

Over and over, I see these news articles on the Iran war that seem to neglect major issues, including the likely water shortage that Tehran will face this month. I'm not sure I can take them seriously without real strategic analysis.

According to trump and Hegseth, the Iranian navy was destroyed. Did they not tell the truth? At the nato summit trump said it was a war and was not a war in the same sentence. He hammers away that Iran cannot have a nuke. At nato he said he wasn’t worried about them getting nukes because it’s all deeply buried under rubble. Which is it? If he says he is not sending ground troops, does that mean he is sending ground troops?

Canadian/British citizens like me never really cared about who might win the war in Iran, but we all hoped Trump would lose. And he did, spectacularly. And now we all hope his self-imposed Iranian quagmire continues to bedevil him for the remainder of his tortured presidency. And it looks like he's off to a good start, splendid!

Great piece of sanewashing. One would almost think Trump and company had a rational military plan. But after several absurd flip flops, Trump cannot admit his failure and has, instead, turned his laser focus on winning the 2020 election. No, the man has lost all control and sooner or later you're going to have to report it.

"But it would be difficult, and lives could be lost in either taking or holding the island."
please. we are not children.... lives "will" be lost and are being lost right now. trump has two options if he wants to "win":
1. invade
2. drop a nuke
he's impulsive enough to do either of these things with hegseth and his hand picked general backing him up. voices of reason are being sidelined or fired from our military as we speak.

This thought on the part of what remains of US strategic military planners is laid out very clearly in this article: “Senior U.S. officials said time remains on the American side as Iran’s economy collapses.”
There is no clear reason to believe that any level of Iranian economic collapse will force Iran to change its stance on opening the strait. The Iranian leadership has eliminated its opposition internally by killing them.

Central Command said “American forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready.”
Sounds a lot like ICE forces domestically. Sadly, the GOP (including Senator Collins) did authorize Trump’s special operation on legal immigration, and now seem incapable, or scared,
of reining in any of Trump’s global & domestic reigns of terror.

The world cannot afford to have America's military power in the grasp of a man who is increasingly unstable and whose principal focus appears to be his self-interest. The military should not be expected to support an egomaniac who at least muses on commanding war crimes. It is scarcely credible that congress still does not act.
The western world can only respond by distancing militarily and economically from the USA. That erosion of the historic western alliance, and the weakening of America on the global stage, is perhaps the victory that Iran seeks and is gaining.

Sitting in Mar-a-Lago surrounded by obsequious donors, Trump must have thought that as the most powerful person on the planet, Iran, like all else in his world, would crumble and shower him with thanks and he would laud them with his praise. What could go wrong? By most reports he is inattentive in his briefings and at best skims the reports. His most senior military office, Pete Hegseth, has been itching for another war, any war. Trump renamed the Department of Defense the Department of War which is how Hegseth intended to direct it. Manly white males, valiant combat ready soldiers, muscular and obedient could take on any country, anywhere, any time. The staggering military budget could be crafted to benefit the Trump family with inside information for stock trades and invitation-only deals. As Eisenhower warned about a military industrial complex, Trump could envision a military-Trump complex. In WWI the trench warfare was measured in mere yards of movement back and forth, at a staggering cost of lives. The Iran war (it is indeed a war) is a variant fought from the air with missiles, drones, and bombs, but it is getting more like aerial trench warfare where there carnage is great and the result indecisive. Vietnam was similar. What is euphemistically called “measured response” will not turn this tide. Like WWI, which side will be exhausted first? Likely, Iran will wait out Trump’s term in office. Vietnam was sold to the American people as necessary containment too. Ha!

“ But the real question is: Can Iran’s hard-line leadership outlast Mr. Trump’s anxiety over rising oil prices?”
———
That is a “real” question but “the real question” is: Will Congressional Republicans in both Chambers finally join Democrats and exert their war powers? Given the length of the war, will Congress:
Assert its right to withhold authorization and funding for the war unless or until the Trump Administration provides:
1) a valid, meaningful justification for the war;
2) explicit and consistent goals for the war acceptable to Congress and the public;
3) an explicit and viable plan to achieve the goals; and, provides
4) a demonstrated effort to develop the coalition of our allies that the Administration eschewed when it started the war.
And without that, will Congress tell the Administration continuation of the war will not be authorized and funding will not be provided?

The first round cost $200 BILLION.
How much more will Trump waste to distract from the Epstein files?
I suspect the corporate media will help Trump by ignoring this and helping the billionaire Epstein-class that runs the country.

Whether you agree or disagree with the actions that brought us to where we are today, Trump has to learn to keep his mouth shut. Not an easy task I know, but I’m sure no US military personnel agrees that broadcasting our intentions 24/7 is good policy. Some responsible administration individual, if there are any, has to take away his phone. Issuing non-stop provocative and inflammatory statements does not help us win. And I hope that the defense contractors that manufacture our missiles, ammunition and drones have approved unlimited overtime for their employees. We’ll need it.

So the 60 day clock triggering the War Powers Act is anew? And all the past days of fighting don’t count! And I suppose that if he calls off this newest fighting before 60 days then he doesn’t Congressional approval.
To Trump and his confederates rules, regulations and laws are not things to be followed. Rather things to find their ways around.

The hat, a red hat, proclaimed “Trump Was Right About Everything”.
Well, not really. He got this completely wrong with his belief that he can bully anyone he desires and have them give in.
Not this time.
So as he bombs Iran inflicting hundreds or more civilians and spending billions of dollars of our treasury, causing economic turmoil in every nation, what will he have achieved?
But, never fear. Trump still has his fan club who still believe this is a war that can be won easily. I believe it to be a war that no victor will prevail. A war of attrition conducted on our part by fools.
Should there be no clear exit from the Trump Massive Debacle will Congress finally put a stop to it?

So reading these articles, is there anyone that doesn’t think crushing the current Iranian government is a good idea? It may seem it is more there maybe a lack of confidence about or if there was a plan to accomplish that goal?
While there has always been an undercurrent of antisemitism in the country highlighted by the chants in Charlottesville or Synagogue attacks, question is where is the funding coming from for these domestic terrorist and their media. Then would be nice to learn were the Social Democrats are getting there funding too?
All of this is part of this War, because it cannot just be the noise from supporters of Hamas and Hezbollah thinking peace comes after just a two state solution. Iran actions aren’t really driven by a wish for peace after the two State solution.

Now that Trump has single handedly started this war how is this going to end. Clearly Iran has decided that the only way to protect itself is to close the straights by use of force. Clearly Iran is committed to controlling traffic and charging a toll. To Trump's horror Iran wants to enforce the MOU. Control the straights, tolls in 60 days, no sanctions, their frozen money back, 300 billion in blackmail from its neighbors as we talk about nuclear issues. This will go on to at least next year. Iran brought down Carter they are now set to bring down Trump.

The decimation of the State Department diplomatic corps and the leadership of the US Defense Department has exposed the United States to unprecedented risks. Smart and experienced civil servants were foolishly cast adrift. The quagmire with Iran requires real leadership, intelligence and cunning, not bluster and carpet bombing. Historically, it was Saddam Hussein and Iraq that kept Iran in check, but the US toppled the only government that was truly feared by Iran. The elder Bush understood the importance of Iraq and stayed out of Baghdad. Bush junior thought he knew better. Iran’s leaders are playing a long game. Trump is only playing through November. Trump, Hegseth, and Rubio lack the intellectual capacity to fully game this mess out to a respectable resolution. We squandered the chance to support real regime change and empowered the IRCG beyond their wildest dreams. How did the US fail to arm the opposition in Iran? What happened to the weapons we tried to secretly ship? Saddam and Gaddafi were deeply flawed, but they filled power vacuums. The US destabilized the mideast with Operation Desert Storm in Iraq, and taking down Libya. Iran became the preeminent hegemon in region.

“American forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready.”
And largely ineffective. Iran's ability to close the Straight has not been materially affected and the US is using up it best armaments at a faster rate than Iran.
The problem, of course, it not the American military. It should never have been there in the first place. The problem is the Trump administration's addiction to mindless macho displays and its abandonment of diplomacy.
To date, Trump's attempts at diplomacy have been even more pathetic than his military adventures. He will never achieve half as much in Iran as the JCPOA. He was unable to make even a dent in the Ukraine war. Gaza is a disaster.
Couple this with his incessant antagonism against all of our allies and his self-destructive economic moves and you see that Mr. Trump has terribly weakened the US in its military, its diplomacy, its allies, and its economy. It has nothing left.
